Privacy Policy
Last updated October 30, 2026 · Operated by After Key Solutions Ltd (59-4660587)
The short version. Your note is encrypted in your browser. We store a sealed copy we cannot read, plus the few plain details the service needs to work: your email, your heirs' names, and the timers you set. We don't sell data, run ads or use tracking cookies. We never hold, move or see your crypto.
1. What we cannot see
Afterkey is built so that we are not able to read your note, even if we wanted to or were asked to.
- The note itself. It is encrypted in your browser (AES-256-GCM) before it is sent. We store only the encrypted copy.
- Your note passphrase. It never leaves your device. We keep your note key only in a form locked with that passphrase.
- Your heir's half of the key. It is printed on the card you give your heir and travels only in the part of a link that browsers never send to a server.
Our half of each key is random data that is useless on its own. Because of this design, we cannot recover your note if you lose your passphrase, and we cannot hand its contents to anyone, including authorities, because we don't have them.
2. What we collect
| What | From whom | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Email address, first name, password (stored only as a one-way hash) | Account owners | To sign you in and send safety alerts. Your first name appears in alerts to heirs, for example “Dana left something for you”. |
| Encrypted note, locked note key, your settings (check-in interval, waiting period, extra alert emails) | Account owners | To keep your note and run the timers you chose. |
| Heir name, relationship, optional email; our half of each heir's key | Account owners, about their heirs | To print heir cards and tell an heir if the dead man's switch fires. Only add people you are allowed to share these details about. |
| Email and note entered when someone starts a claim | People holding an heir card | To keep them updated during the waiting period. |
| Uploaded documents, such as a death certificate | People holding an heir card | To let a person on our team check the document and, if approved, shorten the waiting period to 14 days. |
| Waitlist email, optional quiz result and answers, how you found us (campaign tag or referring site), referral code, page language | Waitlist visitors | To invite you to early access and understand which channels work. |
| Event history (claim started, cancelled, check-in, and similar) | Generated by the service | So you can see what happened to your vault, and so we can investigate problems. |
| IP address, browser type, pages requested, time | Every visitor | Standard web server logs, used for security and fixing errors. |
We do not ask for wallet addresses, seed phrases, private keys or exchange logins, and we never connect to your wallets. Anything like that belongs inside your encrypted note, where we can't see it.
When paid plans launch, payments will be handled by a payment provider named at checkout. We will receive confirmation of payment and limited details such as the last four digits of a card or a transaction reference, never full card numbers.
3. How we use it
- To provide the service: store your encrypted note, run check-ins, the waiting period and the dead man's switch, and release our half of the key when the rules you set say so.
- To send messages the service depends on: check-in reminders, claim alerts, release notices and account emails. You can't turn these off while you have an account, because they are how the safety features work.
- To email waitlist members about early access and launch. To stop, reply to any of these emails or write to us.
- To keep the service secure, prevent abuse and fix problems.
- To comply with the law.
We do not sell or rent personal information, we do not share it for advertising, and we do not use it to train AI models.
6. How long we keep it
- Account, encrypted note, heirs and settings: until you delete your account.
- Uploaded documents: deleted automatically 90 days after the claim they belong to is closed. We keep only the outcome of the review.
- Waitlist entries: until the waitlist is no longer needed or you ask us to remove you.
- Server logs: about two weeks.
- Backups: database backups are kept for up to 30 days, so deleted data disappears from backups within that time.
7. Your choices and rights
You can see and change your settings and heirs in your dashboard at any time. To get a copy of the information we hold about you, correct it, or delete your account, email [email protected] from the address on your account. We will reply within 30 days.
Deleting your account deletes your encrypted note and our halves of the keys. After that, the heir cards you printed stop working for good.
Depending on where you live, for example in California or another US state with a privacy law, or in the EU or UK, you may have specific legal rights over your data. We give the same rights to everyone, wherever they live. You may also complain to your local data protection authority.
If you are an heir or claimant and want your details removed, write to us. Some records of a claim may be kept for as long as the vault exists, so the owner can see what happened.
8. Security
Besides end-to-end encryption of the note, we use HTTPS everywhere, a strict content security policy that lets only our own code run on the site, hashed passwords, waiting periods the owner can cancel, and email alerts for every claim. No system is perfectly secure. If we learn of a breach that affects your personal information, we will tell you without undue delay.
9. Children
Afterkey is for adults. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has given us their details, contact us and we will delete them.
10. Where data is stored
Our servers are in the United States. If you use Afterkey from another country, your information will be transferred to, stored and processed in the United States and wherever our providers operate.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will email account holders before it takes effect.
